For decades, Freon, also known as HCFC-22 and R-22, was the main refrigerant chemical used in rink cooling systems. To help protect the ozone layer, the EPA has mandated that the production of Freon be stopped by January 2020, thus requiring over 1900 rinks in Canada and 2500 in the US to upgrade their systems.  This is a costly, but important upgrade, that will help keep our family’s safe in the future.  We have chosen to transition from R refrigerants to an Ammonia based system.
